An experienced man, Clay has held a boyish fascination for her since seeing her picture in a society publication, motivating his career as prospector and manager of her father's mining operation in the fictional republic of Olancho so that, like Gatsby, he can win his own Daisy.Ĭlay's proto-typical Gatsby pre-occupations are so pronounced that it's impossible to believe that Fitzgerald was unaware of this book: "the great part of the inspiration I have had to do what little I have done came from you. In the words of Uncle Roger: haiya □□□ It was just boring and not my taste.īut yeah. So no, I don't really have a lot to say about this book. ![]() I'm only giving it two stars because it will definitely give me many Things to Say™ in class on Monday. Not to mention that the big tough cowboy machismo trope is so overdone, the Annie Oakley Western Girl™ was cringe, the romance was one of those "weird flex but ok" kinds, and I had to keep myself from throwing the book out the window many times. This book is *not* a critique of American imperialism and racism (as in the case with Faulkner or Twain), but it is an example of imperial and racist propaganda. It's sort of about the Spanish-American war, so I realize why they had me read it for my Imperialism class, but I found the plot very boring, the main American characters and the novel's tone was overtly racist, and I just couldn't come to like the amateur writing style. The appendices, which bring together primary materials by writers and politicians such as Rebecca Harding Davis, Theodore Roosevelt, Jose Martí, Mark Twain, Herbert Spencer, and others, address such issues as social Darwinism, masculinity, and ideas of Anglo-American superiority. A huge best-seller, the novel did its part to push the nation into war against Spain, and stands as one of the most important texts in the literature of American imperialism. Written on the eve of the Spanish-American War, Soldiers of Fortune casts the young American as the dashing, hypermasculine hero of the new military and economic. When the coup, organized by corrupt politicians and generals, threatens the American-owned Valencia Mining Company, Clay organizes his workers and the handful of Americans visiting the mine into a counter-coup force. A romance of America’s nascent imperial power, Richard Harding Davis’s Soldiers of Fortune recounts the adventures of Robert Clay, a mining engineer and sometime mercenary, and Hope Langham, the daughter of a wealthy American industrialist, as they become caught up in a coup in Olancho, a fictional Latin American republic. ![]() ![]() ![]() The only thing I can say I like about this place is that it's right across the street from the beach and the price was pretty good for such a location. Also, the walls are paper thin at the Royal Clipper so you can hear your loud drunken neighbors and every car that goes by. We struggled with having enough room to park in a little car. The parking lot is also very tight, so if you have a larger vehicle I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all. The pool is very, very tiny and I didn't even bother going in. The elevator was very dark and felt like it was about to break down. The power went out several times that morning, but that's nothing the hotel could control. The second room we stayed at was also on the 5th floor and it was nicer than the room with the missing headboard and curtains. We had to switch rooms our second night since they messed up our original room, which wasn't a big deal. It was rather shocking, but I didn't get hurt so I laughed it off. When I went to take it down, a large piece of splintery wood fell on me. Also, I put a towel up in the closet for a little while until I needed it. The door almost hits the toilet when you go to open or close it. The bathroom is extremely tiny, so if you are claustrophobic or overweight at all, you may struggle in this bathroom. Not a huge deal, but I read a review on here earlier about the ant problem in this hotel. Also, there were no curtains, just blinds, so the room was unbearably bright in the morning. There was also a drill and a bag of screws on the table next to the TV. Well, we got to our room and the first thing we noticed was one of the bed headboards was just sitting there on the floor. One of the staff came by and was shocked that they booked us that room. They put us into room 108, but when we went to go in, the carpet was SOAKED with water and they were obviously in the middle of fixing it. God gives those who come to Him through faith in Jesus credit for Jesus' goodness instead of judging us based on our own goodness. He came to die on a cross in Jerusalem to pay for our sin. ![]() That trusting, dependent humility is something Jesus recently highlighted (Matthew 19:13–15). Understanding that we are not good, that we are sinful, is the first step toward understanding the gospel of Jesus: We need His goodness to be saved. Jesus wants this rich, young ruler to know that he is not truly good. Instead, He is exposing to this man that he cannot keep even these five commandments. Jesus begins to list five of the Ten Commandments (Matthew 19:18), ending with the two in this verse: Honor your parents, and love your neighbor as yourself.Īs with prior verses, Jesus is not saying that if a person could obey these five commands from God perfectly, they would receive eternal life. Perceptively, the man asks, "which commands?" Likely, he wanted to know if the additional commands added over the years by the Pharisees were necessary or only the commands of Moses. In other words, to commit no sins at all. He tells the man to keep the commandments if he would enter life. His intent is to walk through the question with the rich man from the perspective of Judaism. Jesus' response (Matthew 19:17) is not meant to be taken out of context. Jesus is subtly asking the man if he's willing to see Jesus as good-meaning to see Him as God-and obey accordingly (John 14:15). At the same time, Jesus' response sets the stage for the rest of the encounter. This is Jesus' first clue to the man that his own goodness will not be enough to save him. It is the essential question at the heart of nearly every religion. A wealthy young man (Luke 18:18 Matthew 19:20) is asking Jesus what good thing he must do to have eternal life, to be included in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:16). ![]() ![]() ![]() Our students often win local, national, and international awards, including in design competitions. ![]() Our curriculum focuses on understanding landscapes across multiple scales-from yards to neighborhoods and parks to entire cities and watersheds-and prepares students to face many different kinds of challenges in diverse places and regions.
